Federal Jury Convicts Inmate for Assaulting Federal Officer

LUBBOCK, TX—An inmate at the Federal Correctional Institution in Big Spring, Texas, Ray Ramirez-Bueno, 45, was convicted by a federal jury in U.S. District Court in Lubbock yesterday of assaulting a federal officer, announced acting U.S. Attorney James T. Jacks of the Northern District of Texas. Ramirez-Bueno faces a maximum statutory sentence of eight years in prison and a $250,000 fine. U.S. District Judge Sam R. Cummings ordered a pre-sentence investigation with sentencing to be scheduled after that investigation is completed.

The government presented evidence at trial that on March 6, 2008, Correctional Officer Terry Curtis Lloyd was conducting a search of inmate lockers on the third floor of the Sunset Range at the Federal Correctional Institution in Big Spring. When Officer Lloyd attempted to search inmate Ramirez-Bueno’s locker, Ramirez-Bueno slammed his right shoulder into the locker door, causing it to close on the officer’s right hand. Ramirez-Bueno refused to submit to hand restraints and assumed a fighting stance with corrections officers. Ramirez-Bueno later threatened to kill the officers if they touched him. Eventually, Ramirez-Bueno agreed to go to the Lieutenant’s office, where he submitted to hand restraints and was sent to the Special Housing Unit.
